Key Text: Luke 12:15 KJV - And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Greed, covetousness, the love of money and materialism cause the heart of man to drift away from God. And the heart that is far from God will usually be plagued by sorrow and misery. There may be temporary happiness, but without contentment real joy will definitely be missing. Covetousness like idolatry takes the heart away from the Lord. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry - 1 Corinthians 10:14.
Covetousness is a snare which causes men to fall into temptation and many foolish and hurtful lusts. It also drowns men in destruction and perdition. The victims of covetousness err from the faith and are pierced through with many sorrows. Covetousness is very deadly and should never be found in the life of any believer that is serious about spending eternity in heaven.
Beware of the idol of covetousness: a covetous person is indirectly serving another God - Colossians 3:5. The Scripture warns; And seeketh thou great things for thyself, seek them not. But seek ye first, the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you - Jeremiah 45:5a; Matthew 6:33.
Prayer: O Lord, I pray, let my affection be set on heavenly things, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Reflection: But godliness with contentment is great gain - 1 Timothy 6:6.
