RETALIATION FORBIDDEN

Jul 06 2020

Key Text: Matthew 5:38-39 KJV - Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

The Word of God is infallible. Some people doubt the veracity of God's word when they compare references in the Old Testament with the words of Jesus in our key text. They support their ungodly retaliatory actions with the misinterpretation of these Scriptures: (Exodus 21:22-25; Leviticus 24:19-20; Deuteronomy 19:18-21). But these verses do not in any way support retaliation. The judges are to apply them to convicted persons while the law enforcement officers (not the victims) execute the court orders.

Jesus was not changing the Word but was simply correcting the wrong interpretations given by the scribes and the Pharisees. Retaliation is flagrant disobedience to the commandment of the Lord. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord. Let God fight for you, while you hold your peace.

Prayer: O Lord, open my understanding that I may understand the Scriptures and give me the grace to obey them, in Jesus name. Amen.

Reflection: Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men - Romans 12:17.
